Romford origins can be traced back to the 13th century
where it became a
stop off point on the road from Colchester and London. Henry III
granted
the right to hold a market in Romford in 1247. Although originally
part of
Essex, Romford was a founding member of an enlarged London under
the
GLC. It has a population of some 60,000 people.
Since 1885 Romford has had 17 different MPs, 3 Liberals, 8 Tories
and 6 Labour.
In 1929 Romford elected its first Labour MP H.T Muggeridge.
Romford Labour Party was formed in the 1920’s and was originally
based in Saffron Road Collier Row. It relocated to its present
home
273 Saffron House South Street in the 70’s.
